My fans cheered from the sidelines as the starter got ready to shoot the gun. I pushed the gas on my ATV as the blast from the gun echoed in my head. Driving over the rough terrain, my opponent was ahead of me. Jake Westfield. His name brought a rush of adrenaline to my body and I pushed even harder on the gas stick. I hated him. Ever since my accident from my last race, he brought anger to me. I fought hard to keep the tears from sliding down my face, as I recalled the events from my accident: As I flew over the last hill, it was too much for my quad. The screws holding the muddy wheels came off, and as I reached the ground, my leg got caught in the wheel and then everything went black. Waking up from my dreams, my vision was hazy. As I started to clear my eyes, I noticed that my mom was hovering over me. Wringing her hands together, nervously.
" Are you OK?", she asked, her voice full of worry. "My head hurts a bit, and so does my left leg
, "I replied my voice tinted with pain.
The doors leading to my room flew open, as the doctor came striding in. Then he motioned for my mom to talk with him. As he stopped talking, my mom's face was a mess. Tears rolled down her face, as she told me what was going to happen to me. My mind tried to soak in the words, but couldn't. "You will never quad again". Those words were all I heard as I drifted into a restless sleep.
Blurred vision greeted me as I groggily tried to stand up. I was confused. The next thing I knew, was that I was being trolled back into the same room I had occupied earlier. Doctors in white lab coats, and nurses hurried by us. As the nurse pushing my cart, went into my room, I noticed that my mom was sitting in the chair next to my bed. Her face was ceased with wrinkles, and she looked like she hadn't slept at all.
"Johnny, how's it going,"she asked, her voice blanketed with sleep.
"I'm fine," I replied, my voice small and quiet.
I raced around the track, as bits of dirt and small stones flew into my face. Determined, I zipped around the corner and flew down the last stretch of the track. Day after day I practised on the track, until I thought I was ready. And then it was finally Friday November 20 2009, the day of the Indy ATV Races. My body flowed with adrenaline, as I got ready for the race. As I stopped recalling the events from my accident, the starter pushed the trigger, and we were off!
It was the last stretch of the race and Jake and I were tied. Then as I was about to lose hope, I saw the finish line, with decorated balloons gracefully floating on top of the sign. At the last corner, I pulled ahead with all my might and bolted over the finish line. My fans cheered as I walked into the winners circle. Surprised, I saw Jake Westfield smiling at me. And that was the day that we became best buddies.
